December 1, 2020

This month’s art prompt is Sparks Joy!, inspired by the theme of Gallery 2’s seasonal exhibition, the Member’s Salon: Show and Sale.
This piece by Grand Forks local Carol Mitchell is called “Evelyn and Earl.” The cabin is her cabin in Newfoundland. Carol says: “Newfoundland is a place that has always sparked joy for me. I bought my little place in 2000 and when I got it, it had been a small home and had lots of little treasures that I have made into art. I found Earl’s little calendar/diary and a little love story emerged. I like to think they started their story in my little place and this sparks joy in my heart.”
For this art prompt, we want you to create a piece of art that brings you joy. You can draw, paint, sculpt, it’s up to you!
Send us a picture of your artwork to programs@g2gf.ca or post it in the comments on Gallery 2’s Facebook page. Check back at the beginning of every month for a new Art Prompt and to see what your fellow artists have done.

The Member's Salon is an opportunity to showcase the range of creative output in Grand Forks and the Boundary. Works in a dizzying array of media, format and price are on display throughout the holiday season. This is your chance to get a unique artwork while supporting the local arts community and Gallery 2.

November 1, 2020

This month’s art prompt is Nature, inspired by the artwork of Heather Good. Heather is a Nelson based artist who has several artworks in Gallery 2’s art rental collection, including this work titled “Poppy Field.”
In Heather’s own words: “I rely on nature for inspiration, creating semi-abstract works with recognizable and familiar elements.  Seeing patterns in stone or brick, noticing the way the leaves have fallen onto the ground; the myriad of colours and textures on a piece of lichen… I create by instinct, interpreting the natural world around me through marks, lines, shapes, patterns— taking in my surroundings and galvanizing my creative pathways.”
For this art prompt, we want you to create a piece of art that is inspired by the natural world around you. You can draw, paint, sculpt, it’s up to you!

October 1, 2020

This month’s art prompt is the land I live on, inspired by the exhibition Grand Theft Terra Firma by David Campion and Sandra Shields. Grand Theft Terra Firmaturns the foundational myth of Canada on its head – framing the theft of S’ólh Téméxw (BC’s Fraser Valley) as an imaginary video game in which the settlement was premeditated grand theft, stoked by racism and fueled by greed.

This piece is one of the gameplay “screenshots” from the exhibition called Moving Mary Jane. This image is based on the story told by Leq’á:mél elder Susan Lewis about her pregnant grandmother who was forced to leave her farm at Tlat-whaas (Norrish Creek) in the 1870s at the behest of settlers who wanted prime land for themselves.

For this art prompt, we want you to create a piece of art that acknowledges your use of this land, which is on the traditional and unceded territory of the Sylix and Sinixt people.

Grand Theft Terra Firma
is on display at Gallery 2 until November 14th.
