Pam Baker-Stassi

Pam's work is known for both capturing the rugged beauty of nature and preserving history's fleeting moments. Her subject matter, whether domestic or wild subjects are painted with an eye for their spirit as much as their physical form. Her most ambitious and popular project was documenting some of the old Doukhobor buildings in the region. In 1984 she traveled around the Castlegar/Grand Forks area with her partner, to photograph and document the houses that were still standing. From these images she began a series of drawings and paintings to recreate the "beautiful simplicity and dignity" of these heritage buildings. "I was greatly moved by the existing Doukhobor houses," said Baker-Stassi in her artists statement. "There was sadness in seeing these heritage buildings continue to fall into disrepair".
