Barry Douglas
Barry Douglas was born to farming parents on an 800 acre sheep station in New Zealand. It was in the visual arts that Barry found a world “that did not put suffocating limitations on me. I could just be by myself, the artist, and receive approval and praise.” In 1959 Barry came to Canada and liked what he saw and ended up marrying and starting a family. At this time he accepted the fact that it would be a difficulty for an artist to make a living so he put that aside and went into various business ventures that allowed him to retire early. In the early 90s he returned to developing his creative energies by travelling the valleys and mountains of the Kootenay and Boundary regions alone and with other artists painting and photographing landscapes. He prefers to work with oil paint and acknowledges the influence of the Group of Seven in many of his paintings. Barry Douglas passed away November 18, 2014.
