The Space Between: the World Before Us

July 21 - September 8, 2018

The Space Between is an exploration of the social networks formed from the relationships among fictional characters in a novel. Dialogue from a novel is organized according to character and the flow of conversation is tracked by directional lines. Using markers, pencil and paint, the network is plotted and mapped on paper that covers much of the gallery walls, immersing the viewer in the experience. Resembling speech balloons, the resulting organic forms are determined not only by the character’s words but also by the surrounding dialogue of others and the complicated network of lines that link them. The shapes of these conversations and of the spaces between them co-determine each other.
