Noboru Sawai

February 6 - April 2, 2016

Gallery 2 will be hosting an exhibition of works from the long career of Japanese Canadian artist Noboru Sawai. Sawai has devoted his printmaking practice to making sensuous, erotic art since the 1970s. Sawai obtained a BFA and an MFA in Minnesota in the 1960s before returning to Japan to study woodblock printmaking under Toshi Yoshida at the International Hanga Academy in 1970. Incorporating printmaking techniques that include relief and intaglio, Sawai combines “soft woodcut” and “firm, linear copper etching” processes in his work. As with his printmaking techniques, Sawai draws his imagery from diverse sources including the Kama Sutra, traditional Japanese woodblock print styles and the often erotic imagery of The Pillow Book,as well as images from Inuit legends. Be sure to come and witness the amazing work of Noboru Sawai. Opening Reception: Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 1-3pm
