Honouring Bert Schroeder

September 29 - October 27, 2018

After retiring from the RCMP as Staff Sergeant in Grand Forks, Bert got a job as Administrative Assistant at Perley School.  Besides a multitude of tasks with his official job, Bert enjoyed interacting with students in many ways that always brought smiles and laughter to students. He was known for  pulling loose teeth, doctoring injuries, putting kids in garbage cans , hanging  their shoes in trees and dressing as ‘Big Bird’ in the Christmas Concert.
When he retired from his second job, he and his wife, Naida, began making projects for kids to work on in their classrooms. Gallery 2 also benefitted from his expertise when classes visited exhibits.
Every year, many kids made wooden reindeer at Christmas, bunnies at Easter, blackbirds in the spring, and scarecrows in the fall.  There were also wooden cats and horses, and so many other fun crafts, including bug boxes.
Tireless, always cheerful and positive, Bert and Nadia helped kids to feel good about themselves, accomplish things they never thought they could, and have a pleasurable afternoon working with wood and making something beautiful.
